Participant Camp Ground Information
1) ACCESS TO THE CAMP SITE. If you plan to arrive any time on the Friday before 10am, then please
use the castle entrance on Church Road. If you plan to arrive in the morning on Festival days then you must enter and exit the camp grounds via the Church road gate only. Once inside the camp ground you have access by car or on foot to the castle grounds. No vehicles will be allowed to move on the Festival site while the grounds are open to the public from the hours of 10am to 6 pm, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Vehicles must be parked in designated parking areas when the gates are open to the public. Your cooperation is appreciated and the authentic look and feel of the Festival should be a source of pride for all participants. ARRIVAL AFTER 10 PM. Many of the campers will have had very long days or may be on site with children and wish to go to sleep early. As a result any camper who cannot arrive by car before 22.00hrs or who wants to leave and come back on site must take special care not to wake others on arrival. When you arrive you will be directed to a large field. It is not the flattest but there is lots of space. (Please see enclosed maps and be considerate of others at all times.)
2) GARBAGE. Any garbage, which you bring on site, will you please take it out with you or deposit it in the garbage containers provided. There is no one hired to clean the site afterwards so if you leave a mess it will have to be cleaned up by your fellow society members. You don't want to upset someone who may be coming at you with a sword on another weekend so please keep the campsite clean. If you didn't bring garbage bags then ask the Malcolm Group representative on the camp site and he will supply you with one.
3) OPEN FIRES. Open fires will only be allowed in the designated fire pit. It may also be that at the time of the Festival prevailing dry or windy conditions require the Organisers to ban open fires completely. In this case please respect our wishes. Some firewood will be available on site, however if you have a little extra at home and the space in your car could you bring some along. Don't forget your deck chairs. There will be designated points on the campsite where fire-fighting equipment is available. Please familiarize yourself with these.
4) MEETINGS. There will be a general meeting at a location to
be announced on the castle grounds on Friday at 8pm to which the leaders of the groups or their representative must attend. All participants are welcome. We will go over the following days programme and I will try to answer any questions that you may have. We will meet again on Saturday at 8.30pm at the Buxom Wench to discuss any changes that will have to be made to the programme and to answer any questions for new arrivals.
5) FOOD AND DRINK. On site caterers will be open all weekend. There will be a special re-enactor's breakfast each morning in the Buxom Wench Tavern from 6am to 9am.
The caterers will be giving a discount to the festival participants at night in order to make the food more affordable, just ask where you pay. The food and beer tent will also be open on Friday and Monday night by popular demand from 6pm to 10pm. This is so that you can relax, meet your friends and not have to fight the weekend traffic home. Each morning a food van will be open at the campsite for hot drinks and breakfast as will the Buxom Wench. Bringing your own food and drink to the Tavern is discouraged by the management.
6) SECURITY. We ask for your help with campsite security. We have at least two all night walk around security guard on site at all times. He will open the gate for late arrivals and generally patrol the site. In addition a Malcolm Group Events representative will be in charge of the site. They can not be in all places at all times. There are always outsiders who would try and cause trouble or go and do what they shouldn't. Please be on the lookout for trouble and either tell our security staff or ask these strangers to politely leave. At a large campsite absolute safety of your belongings is impossible so please take precautions with your valuables. As is always the case the Organisers cannot take responsibility for any lost or stolen property. However, if you take the time to get to know who is camped next to you so that you will notice any strange faces then this will go along way toward making the camp site more secure and it's a great way to make new friends. Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter.
7) WATER AND TOILETS. Drinking water is only available from
various locations in the campsite. Hot water and showers are available again this year at Bader Hall, which is a short walk from the campsite. Enter Bader Hall by the main entrance and follow the signs. Please be sure to bring your own towels and to leave the shower rooms in a clean and tidy state so that others can enjoy them and the management of the Castle does not remove the privilege from us. Please also do not wander the halls of Bader Hall as you may disturb the paying guests staying there and will be unnecessarily challenged by security. To my knowledge we are the only show that offers hot showers to the re-enactors please help protect this privilege. The showers are open for your use from 6am to 9pm.
We have hired additional toilets for the campground as well as positioning some of the general public toilets close to the campsite so that they are within a short walk. Please leave them, as you would wish to find them. The inevitable pressure on them during peak periods may lead to a shortage of toilet paper from time to time. Sorry about this but the prudent traveler never goes without bringing his own just in case.
Your enjoyment of the weekend is important to us and we want you to come back to Herstmonceux Castle every year on August Bank Holiday Weekend. Without you and the friends that you tell about the Festival there will be no Festival. Please allow for the fact that we are adding to the event each year and that there may be some teething problems. Tell us how we can make it better for next year and we will make changes.
